This was followed by honesty (42.1%), approachability (41.5%) and a sense of humour (38.3%). What all of these traits have in common is a theme of openness and support. Clearly, UK workers want to find themselves in a workplace where people are able to express their opinions without fear of unjust negativity. 1.  Positivity Every office has that shining beacon of positivity, and some are lucky enough to have more than one. Again, this is something more employers should recognise. Happiness at work equals productivity; a brand new survey from employee services provider Personal Group proves that  happy workers are 12% more productive. Happiness at work can be influenced by a number of factors, from pay to how the office itself is designed. 2. Creativity   Our minds work differently, and we often approach problems from different angles â€" this is all to do  with creativity. Creative minds are best put to use in collaboration with others, as ideas bounce off one another and become industry-leading campaigns (or are retired to the wastepaper bin, as some are). Because, while success might be reflected in profit margins and ROIs, they only exist because of brave, bold ideas. Good ideation processes will always uncover the creative minds of your workplace, so employers should be taking the time to engender a positive, creative environment in order for talent to flourish. 3. Punctuality Being on time is an understated, often-overlooked aspect which gets far less credit than deserved. It goes for anything â€" coming into work on time, delivering tasks and respecting deadlines. If your business is reliant on timing, then this can be even more important. Working in digital, for example, may require you to provide reactive comment on industry developments or events in the media. It’s not only important within the team, it’s great for meeting clients and ensuring that you make a good impression at job interviews. 4. Integrity Integrity relates to so much within the workplace; have you ever taken credit for someone else’s work? Maybe you’ve witnessed something untoward but have neglected to tell anyone. Honesty and trust are central to integrity, and its ethical foundations within work must not be underestimated. It is also closely aligned to passion â€" how much you know about your industry depends on the amount of work you have put in and your genuine interest in the business. 5. Passion   Having a passion for what you do is crucial, not only for personal fulfillment (everyone wants to enjoy what they do) but career advancement, too. HR Directors Spend a Month Recruiting for Open Positions Are you an HR director? Do you spend way too much time recruiting for positions that should have been filled last month? Relax, youre not alone. New research from Robert Half UK  highlights the lengthy recruitment process some HR directors go through. HR directors are spending a month (lets call it February at 27.59 days) on average recruiting for open positions within their organisation, which can result in them losing out on talented candidates who accept jobs from other companies who are able to make hiring decisions more quickly. Mike Haberman,  Consultant and Partner, Omega HR Solutions, Inc: Recruitment time can best be shortened by having the authority to make a hire reside in a small group that is in constant communication or give one person the authority to make quick hires without the involvement of others. In order to do this the rules of engagement have to be well defined and the definitions of skills needed have to have 100% agreement from those involved. Without that the process will take longer and may result in candidates being lost. Top level findings HR Directors in the UK spend 27.59 days on average recruiting for open positions within their organisation The challenge to find qualified candidates (59%) and the increase in the number of CVs per job opening (52%) are the main reasons the hiring process is longer than it was three years ago HR Directors risk losing out on qualified candidates to other opportunities because of the length of the recruitment process Jon Gregory,  Founding Director, Firewalk Technology Ltd: This highly valuable research demonstrates clearly the need for employers to proactively engage with their recruitment consultant to a much deeper level, and not just hand-off the work to them. The top three causes all relate to the quality of candidates applying. Consequently, an employing company needs to put more effort into narrowing the candidate target-spec, focusing ads and selling the role, whilst backing all of that up via their employer-brand reputation. The recruitment process can be broken down into six key stages, all of which take more than four days, on average to complete when using their own in-house resources to manage. Screening CVs (5.19 days) and interviewing applicants (4.77 days) are the most time intensive aspects, while candidate skills testing (4.18 days) takes the least amount of time. Kirstie Kelly, Director of Strategic Relationships, Launchpad: Time to hire has long been an indicator which discerning recruiters measure and often fail to reduce.   But they can only impact on the stages of the process they influence.   Once a candidate has been presented to the business for interview the candidate will often be stuck in the pipe whilst hiring managers drag their feet to find diary time to progress. In our experience, technology which drives better collaboration, decision making and process efficiency can solve this challenge. The Healing Power of Social Networking MSNBC ran an article today entitled  When You Dont Want to Be Friends on Facebook  that I found fascinating. Many commented on the awkwardness of having someone from your junior high or high school days who you havent talked to in decades find you and ask to friend you on Facebook. I have an entirely different take on this and heres why.In January of this year, I started a networking group on Facebook to reconnect with some old friends from high school. Initially, my boomer friends were skeptical and even a little bit nervous about joining, but many did so, perhaps to humor me or maybe just because they were curious or wanted to friend their children to see what they were up to online.What started out as a very modest sized group has grown to the hundreds, thanks to some very tenacious Facebook users and some core friends with a killer email list and super human cybersleuthing capabilities. And while its fascinating to see the numbers in the group grow each day, whats more amazing is the healing power of the group.Lets face ithigh school is not exactly the easiest time in life and the relationships formed there are filled with excitement, passion, disappointment, embarrasment, and defeat.  Yet despite all that, the affinity within the group is quite powerful. The ties you form with your high school peers are tough to match, even if you werent voted best athlete or most likely to succeed.And with those ties comes the power to forgive. Since starting the group, friends have told me about some amazing things that have happened to them online. Two of my friends told me about friendships that blew up in high school or soon after and were never revisited againuntil Facebook. Facebook gave them the courage to say So what was that arguement all about and who cares anymore? Another friend told me he hardly remembers anyone from high school (he cut many classes)yet despite what he initially thought, his wall is full of friends, friends of friends, jokes, videos, old phot os, etc.So if someone from your past reaches out to you on a social or business networking site, dont make your decision to accept the invitation based solely on what the relationship was so many years agoinstead, base your decision on what the relationship could be.

I know Ive had a lot of these lately, but I cant help it Ive been virtually introduced to a lot of people lately who make me not be able to keep my questions to myself. When I came across Zack Hample, an author 3 times over who took his strength/passion of catching/collecting baseballs (5,800 of em!) and made it a consulting business (yes, he gets paid to go to baseball games and help snag balls), I couldnt, um, keep my questions to myself. Hes also been interviewed by Jay Leno, Rosie ODonnell and zillions of other news outlets. In a word: amazeballs (pun intended). 1. What did you wanna be when you grew up? There was only one thing that I wanted to be: a major league baseball player. Im still upset that it didnt happen, and I still dont know what to do with myself. 2. Youve caught more than 5,700 (!!!!) major league baseballs, and now you charge to help others do the same. Its freakin genius. Can you describe what made you decide to make this personal skill/passion a business, as well  as any challenges you met along the way? Im actually past the 5,800-ball plateau now, but anyway, I came up with the idea because so many people kept asking if they could attend games with me. I always used to say no, and then one day, it just occurred to me, Hey, why dont I start saying yes and charge some money? I started the business in the spring of 2007 because my second book,  Watching Baseball Smarter, was coming out, and the timing seemed right. The first challenge, oddly enough, was getting a cell phone. I didnt have one and didnt want one, but realized that it was essential, especially if I was gonna be running around stadiums with peoples kids. The other main challenge was simply spreading the word, but thats something that most business owners struggl e with. Taking people to games is the most fun job ever, and I wish I could do it full time. 3. I love how you  described your parents opinion of your passion as cute until 1992, worrisome through 98, and fantastic once my book came out in 99. Did you find that peoples opinion of what you were doing changed at that point? And if so, howd ya deal with the haters before you legitimized your passionate career? It always bothered me that peoples perceptions changed when my first book came out. I was the exact same guy beforehand, and Id been doing the exact same thing, but no one took me seriously. It made me feel bad for all the other people out there who were getting looked down upon, simply because they hadnt written a book or done something big and public. I mean, on a personal level, I loved all the positive attention, but its still unsettling to this day. 4. Reading through your website and looking at the pics/videos makes me feel like I already know you. Its obviously really authentic stuff, and I know its something lots of entrepreneurs/wanna-be entrepreneurs struggle with. Did you ever feel like you had to be more professional/stuffy? Any advice for those that are scared to put their real personalities out there? Ive never felt that I had to be more professional, but I do censor myself in terms of not being crude or offensive. Sometimes I wish I were completely unknown so that I could really let loose and there may come a time when I do it anyway. I dont think I can offer anyone advice on this subject because Im so conflicted myself. Quite simply, society is very judgmental, and some things are better left unsaid. 5.  If you can have your present self give your pre-pro-baseball-snagger self one piece of advice, what would it be? Foul balls are meaningless. Go for home runs exclusively.
